Program Content

  • Queensland government policies.
  • The components of ‘cultural competence’ for teachers.
  • ABS state and local birthplace and language statistics.
  • The elements of the education process influenced by culture.
  • An experiential exercise exploring the way our perceptions of culturally-different ‘others’ are formed.
  • The migration experience including ‘culture shock’.
  • Cultural differences in the realm of politeness/courtesy/respect.
  • An exploration of education-specific cultural differences.
  • Special needs of students from refugee backgrounds.
  • How second language acquisition differs from first language acquisition.
  • How to utilize the services of professional interpreters to communicate with non-English speaking parents (Short Version).

Who should do this program?

  • Deputy Principals of schools with significant numbers of immigrant, refugee and/or 457 visa students.
  • Professional teachers at any level (pre-school/kindergarten, primary, secondary,TAFE, university including ESL teachers) who have significant numbers of immigrant, refugee and/or 457 Visa family students.
  • Volunteer ESL tutors.

Training Fee

  •   $132.00 pp (incl  GST)
  •   $110.00 pp (incl  GST) for three or more people from one organization when booked for any of the four dates.

Registration is not complete until a signed registration form and full payment are received. A confirmation email/letter from Margaret Bornhorst Cross-Cultural will then be issued.

Cancellation Policy
 
Registrations can be transferred to other participants or to other programs up until 3:00pm three full working days before booked program.
 
Cancellations will receive a full refund if notified five or more full working days before the program.

Cancellation less than five full working days before the program will forfeit the full training fee.
