Program Content

  • Queensland government policies governing cultural and linguistic diversity.
  • Language statistics (2006 Census) for Queensland and local government areas of participants.  
  • An introduction to the amazing world of language, spoken and written. 
  • Important information on second language acquisition which predicts which people will are likely to be able to learn a second language to a functional standard.
  • Learning to separate linguistic proficiency from accent.
  • Improving ability to understand English through a ‘foreign’ accent by focusing on different aspects of the unfamiliar accent.
  • Learning how to send clearer messages when speaking to people who are in the early stages of learning English.
  • Short Version of Communicating through Professional Interpreters, covering the why, when and how of conducting effective interviews through a professional interpreter, including a demonstration link-up to TIS if possible.

Who should do this program?

  • Staff or volunteers of any kind of organization (federal, state and local government; business; community non-profit), including call centre staff, that provides services/information to linguistically-diverse customers/clients/ consumers/public, either on the telephone or face-to-face.
  • Team leaders, supervisors and managers of public contact staff.
  • Managers, supervisors and staff of organizations employing non-English speaking 457 Visa holders.
  • Anyone who would like to improve their communication skills.

Training Fee

  •  $88.00 pp (includes GST)
  •  $77.00 pp (includes GST)for three or more people from one organization when booked for any of the six dates.

Terms and Conditions

Registration is not complete until a signed registration form and full payment are received. A confirmation email/letter from Margaret Bornhorst Cross-Cultural will then be issued.

Cancellation Policy
 
Registrations can be transferred to other participants or to other programs up until 3:00pm three full working days before booked program.
 
Cancellations will receive a full refund if notified five or more full working days before the program.

Cancellation less than five full working days before the program will forfeit the full training fee.

Venue

All MBC-C 2009 Calendar Programs are delivered at the O'Shea Training Centre, 17 Lovedale Street, Wilston, Brisbane (07 3856 0480). Wilston is five minutes north of the Brisbane CBD. The training room is wheelchair accessible, and the venue is accessible by train, bus and car. Free parking is provided in a dedicated car park, supplemented by free street parking. Full directions are provided on request or on registration.
