Program Content

  • Languages spoken in your community;

  • The difference between a translator and an interpreter;

  • Types of interpreting;

  • Criteria which will help you to decide whether you need a professional interpreter in any given situation;

  • When to use and when not to use a BYO interpreter;

  • The definition of a professional interpreter;

  • NAATI accreditation levels and the level you should ask for;

  • Procedures for arranging an on-site or telephone or interpreter through TIS National and/or ATIS;

  • The costs of employing professional interpreters;

  • How to conduct an effective interpreter-assisted interview;

  • Demonstration of an telephone interview with NAATI-accredited interpreters through TIS and/or ATIS if possible.

 Who should do this program?

  • Staff or volunteers of any kind of organization (federal, state and local government; business; community non-profit) including call centre staff, that provide services/information to customers/clients/consumers/public with inadequate English skills, either on the telephone or face-to face. And team leaders, supervisors and managers of these staff.

  • Deputy Principals of Queensland schools with immigrant/refugee students.

  • Health professionals with multicultural clienteles.

  • Anyone who would like to acquire this skill for whatever reason, or would like to know more about how professional interpreting works.

Registration is not complete until a signed registration form and full payment are received, and the registration has been confirmed by Margaret Bornhorst Cross-Cultural.

Cancellation Policy

Registrations can be transferred to other participants or to other programs up until 3:00pm three full working days before booked program.
 
Cancellations will receive a full refund if notified five or more full working days before the program.

Cancellation less than five full working days before the program will forfeit the full training fee.

Venue

All MBC-C 2009 Calendar Programs are delivered at the O'Shea Training Centre, 17 Lovedale Street, Wilston, Brisbane. Wilston is five minutes north of the Brisbane CBD. The training room is wheelchair accessible, and the venue is accessible by train, bus and car. Free parking is provided in a dedicated car park, supplemented by free street parking. Full directions are provided on request or on registration.
